WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE BECOMING A GRAPHIC DESIGNER.

Are you a graphic designer?

Or do you simply love graphic designs?

Either way, I am going to take you through the basics of what you need to know about becoming a graphic designer.
Art Graphics and design is engraved into our everyday lives. Everywhere we go we see beautiful art created by extremely talented graphic designers. Do you admire them? Do you want to be like them? You certainly can become a great graphic designer but there are a few tiny details you may want to know before going in.

Graphic design involves communicating ideas to the receiver through shapes, fonts, colours and images. You can do it on print and online. It involves so many aspects like; creating logos for companies, advertisements, packaging, digital design, branding, movie tickets, websites magazines. e.t.c. I could go on and on but i believe you understand the bountiful opportunities in graphic design. So here are the few things you need to know before starting out.

LEARN ALL YOU CAN AND KEEP LEARNING.

The first step to becoming a graphic designer is learning as much as you can about graphic design. Take online courses, college classes or even read text books and learn as much as you can about the fundamentals of graphic design. However, we do not want to be text book graphic designers. We want to be practical graphic designers and so we put all that we have learned into practice. You will require software to do so and I recommend the three Adobe musketeers; Adobe photo shop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. There is also free design software if you are on a tight budget. Also, you do not initially need Mac book pros to start graphic design, a normal computer would be good place to start.
Study other people’s works and designs. You can learn a lot from what other people have created. However, do not copy. I do not want you to be sued.

BE CREATIVE.

Creativity is the essence of art. To become a great graphic designer you need to be creative. You need to have a creative perception of everything around you. As a graphic designer, every client you meet will require a burst of fresh ideas and concepts from you. How can you be creative? Well, I do not have an exact response to that, but i do advise you to be keen about your surroundings. You could get invaluable ideas from simple things around you. At first, you may not be as creative as you would like but remember, it needs to be cultivated and with time, your creative nature will reach its’ full potential.

BE A MASTER.

I bet you have heard this before; Do not be a Jack of all trades and a Master of none.

Initially, it would be advisable to juggle about different areas of graphic design until you find a few areas you are exceptionally good at. Once you find your niche, work on it by putting extra practice and ensuring you become really good at it. I know some of you will likely disagree and bring up the need to be versatile but think of it this way; Would you rather be excellent in a few fields of graphic design or would you rather be a sub-standard designer on all the fields of graphic design?

BUILD YOUR PORTFOLIO.

Do not throw away your work. In fact, NEVER throw way any of your work. It does not matter if it was a paid job or a practice design you were working on. Not only can a portfolio be used on a prospective client but it can be used for future references and evaluation of your skill. The designs on your portfolio could drum up the inspiration you need for a new project venture. It may give you the ideas necessary to come up with something new and refreshing, A portfolio can also tell you a lot about your progress. Growth is paramount to nearly everything and this is a measure of how far your skill has developed. So that design you have condemned to the trash or recycle bin, take it back and keep it well. It may be your break through in the future.

ENJOY YOURSELF.

It is easy to be overwhelmed in always trying to come up with the perfect design. Often you will be turned down by clients or employers, they will always be someone better and you will be frustrated. This shouldn’t put you down. Everybody has more likely than not gone through tough situations one point or another and you will overcome them as well. Just remember that graphic design is not just a profession, it is a journey you take and what better thing to do than to enjoy it?

If you have read this to the end, i gather you are very serious about becoming a graphic designer.  Art Graphics for example – is heavily involved in graphics design – even though they are traditionally a picture framers.

I say; GO FOR IT! Put your best effort into acquiring this skill and developing it into excellence and who knows, your first job/project could be a big one!

I wish you all the best in your endeavors.
